Logistics

The sourcing of book  began in late November 2013.  It will be important for us to keep the ball rolling following the Christmas break to collect sufficient books to fill a 20 ft container which has the capacity of 33 cu m!  And so with the first working bee complete, we feel as if this dream will come to fruition.

Sourcing

Books are being sourced from educational institutions in the Waikato Region of New Zealand. At the end of the 2013 school year, we approached many primary and secondary school librarians who were in the process of culling books from their collections and were very happy to know that there would be a good place to send these books. The responses have been very positive and quick from various schools and educational institutions.

The Church of the Latter Day Saints has generously donated the remaining books of the Church College Library to our cause. We are all extremely grateful to Ken Williams for facilitating this.  As a result of securing this collection of books, we will no longer be seeking books from secondary schools but will focus on obtaining more primary level educational materials during early 2014.

We are truly overwhelmed with the positive and quick responses from teachers and librairians in the Hamilton area.

More books are needed especially for the 5 to 18 year age group.  For more details about the type of books we are wanting, please check out.....

If you have any books to be collected, please feel free to contact us.

Sorting and Packing

Books will be sorted into categories for easy unpacking at the PNG end!

Working bees are being set up over the coming weeks to choose, sort and pack the books into manageable sized boxes.

Storage

The University of Waikato has kindly provided us with storage space for the 4 months needed to accumulate the books before filling a container.

Shipment

We aim to fill a 20 foot storage container, and ship it to Lae where internal transport arrangements will be made to take the container up to Kuli for unloading.

"We are very grateful to the Mapai Transport company in PNG offering to freight the 20ft container to Hagen at no cost to me or the organizing committee under their logo Spirit to Serve."

-Theresia

Timeframe

"My thesis is due for submission by the end of April. This will give us time to source and pack the books into the container which hopefully will leave New Zealand soon after my own departure." - Theresia
